Attorney William “Bill” T. May Joins Merkel & Cocke, P.A.
Merkel & Cocke, P.A. is pleased to welcome William “Bill” T. May to the firm. Mr. May is one of the most respected trial lawyers in the state. He brings over 33 years of experience in Mississippi state and federal courts. He focuses his practice on Personal Injury, Medical Malpractice, Product Liability, Premises Liability, and Commercial Litigation.
Mr. May has earned an “AV” preeminent peer review rating from Martindale-Hubbell, given to attorneys ranked at the “highest level of professional excellence for their legal expertise, communication skills, and ethical standards by their peers.”
Mr. May has successfully brought a variety of jury trials to verdict, obtaining significant recoveries for Plaintiffs and defending the interests of both individuals and businesses. He is also a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA), an invitation-only legal organization dedicated to protecting the public’s right to a jury trial; the Newton and Lauderdale County Bar Associations; the American Bar Association; and the Mississippi Association for Justice (lifetime member).
Mr. May graduated with Bachelor and Juris Doctorate degrees from the University of Mississippi, serving as National President of the Ole Miss Alumni Association and President of the Ole Miss Law Alumni Chapter. He also has served in several leadership positions with community and civic organizations in Lauderdale and Newton Counties.
Bill and his wife Brett enjoy spending time with their combined five children and seven grandchildren. He’s also an avid fan of Southeastern Conference sports.

After graduating from the University of Virginia Law School in 1975, Mr. Cocke and Mr. Merkel established Merkel & Cocke, P.A. in 1982. Since that time the emphasis of Mr. Cocke’s practice has progressed toward medical malpractice. At the present time his practice is exclusively devoted to handling medical negligence cases for the plaintiff, either as a result of direct contact by the client or on referral from other attorneys who are not familiar with the handling of medical negligence cases. Mr. Cocke was selected Best Lawyer of the year for 2012 and 2014 in The Memphis area in the field of Medical Malpractice and has been selected a Best Lawyer and Super Lawyer every year since 2006.
