What does Mississippi workers' compensation benefits cover?

The Mississippi workers' compensation program covers the medical expenses, which includes your visits to the doctor, hospitalization, prescription medications and any other reasonable medical treatment required for your injury or occupational disease. The program will also reimburse your mileage traveling back and forth to doctor visits.

If your injury requires you to miss time from work while you are healing, workers' compensation will pay you temporary disability benefits, which you will receive until your injury has healed, or your doctor has decided that you have reached maximum medical improvement (MMI) and you can return to work, or if you have not healed sufficiently to return to work they usually end after 450 weeks. Can I work with my own doctor while receiving workers' compensation benefits?

Yes. In Mississippi, you can choose your own doctor. You must notify your employer right away of your choice of doctor. Otherwise, you may end up working with a doctor appointed by your employer's workers' compensation insurer.

What if my workers' compensation claim was denied?

  • They do not think your injury is serious enough
  • There is no need to take time off or work to recover from your injury
